Do you get intimidated when at the coffee shop, wanting to just order something directly off the menu because you are afraid to ask for anything specific? You are not alone!
But you can get a ton of unwanted calories from your daily coffee…a Starbucks Grande Cafe Latte has a whopping 190 Calories when made with 2% milk, and 220 when made with Whole Milk!
If you order a Grande non-fat, or `skinny’ cafe latte, it will be made with skim milk, and only has 130 calories.
When looking at the Starbucks menu, you can see that there are countless variations that can be made on your favorite drink. Using non-fat milk, sugar free syrups and passing on that whipped cream can really knock off the unwanted calories from your morning or afternoon treat.
These specifications do not only apply to Starbucks. You can use the same terminology at any coffee shop, and they will know what you are asking for.
And don`t be shy! It can feel a bit intimidating or rude to list all of the specialties that you want in your coffee, but trust me, the barista`s are used to these kinds of orders, and are not offended if you ask for non fat or no whip with your mocha.
So, when going out for a coffee, remember these tips:
* If you are not sure what the sizes are, ask if you can see an example of their version of small, medium or large, or in Starbucks case, tall, grande and venti.
* If you are not sure what a drink has in it, or if it automatically comes with whipped cream on top, ask
* Make sure to ask for a non-fat or skinny version, as this mean your drink will be made with skim milk instead of 2% or whole milk
* You can even request how hot you want your beverage-if you are taking it with you, you may want to ask it to be extra hot so it is still warm by the time you reach your destination
* If you are ever in doubt, an Americano with no cream or sugar is 0 calories! A tea is also a great non-fat choice
* If you do use cream in your coffee, make sure to request the barista `leave room for cream`and to make an even healthier choice, ask for some of that skim milk instead of using cream at all to whiten your coffee
